THE NEW ORPHANAGE STORY

In 2014, when my youngest child went off to college, I went to India for six months and ended up at the Good Shepherd Agricultural Mission, a large orphanage in the north near the Nepal border. When I arrived, I was sick, a bit lost, not really sure where I was going in life. My 21-year marriage had just ended. I’d just been laid off from a job I loved, sold my house. Basically, I was homeless and alone. But the kids at the Mission changed all that.

These were not the hollowed-out castaways who needed me to fill them up. They were full of joy and affection, and they poured their love into me day after day as if I were the one who was empty.

DURING MY STAY AT THE ORPHANAGE

I WANTED TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK…SO I STARTED A FEW CAMPAIGNS USING THE CROWD-FUNDING PLATFORM INDIEGOGO.

THE FIRST WAS CALLED SCHOOL DESKS FOR ORPHANS

WE WERE HOPING TO RAISE $4000 TO BUILD 100 DESKS.  WE ENDED UP RAISING MORE THAN $40,000 THANKS TO GENEROUS PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD!

THEN CAME ORPHAN POWER

After a flood destroyed the local power plant, we were hoping to secure a little fuel assistance. We ended up with enough money to install solar systems on several of the hostels.

VIDEOS HELPED US CONNECT

As a TV producer, I loved working with the kids, letting them tell their own story. I wanted the world to see how happy, how beautiful, how full of life orphaned children can be. And the world responded. Take a look and try and keep from smiling.

During these campaigns, I was contacted by many other orphanages from all over the world, all looking for help. They were trying to raise money, too; for blankets, to relocate, to repair a leaky roof, to send their kids to school, to take in more children, to build a bigger facility. Clearly the need is great, but there are scams everywhere. “Orphanage Tourism” is on the rise, using children as a way to take money from generous donors. With so much corruption, I didn’t want to waste a penny. How do you know who to trust? Who should you support?

And then one night, I awoke at two in the morning with an idea:

I COULD HELP FIND THE GOOD ONES

I could create a platform for those orphan champions who are doing it right, telling their stories, and rallying support. I could use my production background to create inspiring videos, use 100% of funds raised to help children in need, and work with the best local experts to have the most impact.

So that’s what I’m doing.

I’m starting slow, one project at a time, doing more as more people get involved. I can say, beyond any doubt, that these kids are worth it, and I hope, together, we can help change the world for as many of them as possible. Thanks.
